The Departed

As a tie in to chapter 7 in Movie History: A Survey, I wanted to talk about the film The Departed.  I re-watched this movie on TV the other day and own the DVD and Blu-ray of this great film and I thought of it immediately when reading chapter 7.  "The Gangster Film" section of chapter 7 may not refer to this type of film exactly, but I often relate them to each other.  Of course, The Departed is a newer film and is a remake of the 2002 Japanese film, Infernal Affairs, but I find similarities between this movie and the movies of the past decades.  The plots are similar and most of the mobsters die at the end.  There are differences though, including the more brutal language and scenes in this movie.  I found it to be one of the most abrasive films I've ever seen, with excessive amount of swears.  All of the swears and violence do add a level of realism to the film which I really liked.  Anyone else feel the same way?

  1. The film was a Boston film, people around the world think our language is "rough". I have traveled the world with the military and often times people have asked to hear me swear with my accent. Even though this movie was not about Whitey Bulger, anyone that has read anything about this man could see the tie-ins. I do look forward to the two Whitey movies coming out in the next couple years. I am excited to see how Depp's portrayal and understanding of character will differ from Affleck's creation. Overall I liked the departed and didnt care what the "harsh" language is in that or any other movie.

  2. Haha ya same here man. People always want to hear my accent too around the country. It will be really interesting to see how Depp portrays Whitey. I want to read more about the making of "The Departed." I agree with you definitely, but the swears were a bit excessive at times. I thought it made it more realistic, but got a bit annoying in some scenes. It's one of my favorite movies.

  3. I havent heard of these Whitey Bulger film and I am very excited to hear about them. I was also surprised to read the Depp was given the role of Whitey. I feel that regardless how well Depp plays Bulger, the movie will do well. His story is too interesting and people will certainly go to see the movie version.

  4. Me too! It will be interesting to see how he does in the role. I'm curious to see if he resembles him at all in the film. Also to add to my other comment, I think it's funny people think our language around here is rough, we just choose to swear more around here haha. I do see your point though Kevin.
